What is Liver Disease?

Liver disease refers to any condition that affects the liver’s ability to function properly. The liver is a vital organ responsible for many functions, including filtering toxins from the blood, producing bile to aid in digestion, and storing energy in the form of glycogen.

Causes

Liver disease can have a wide range of causes, including viral infections (such as hepatitis B and C), alcohol abuse, obesity, autoimmune disorders, and genetic disorders. NASH is becoming the leading cause of liver cirrhosis / liver cancer. Symptoms of liver disease may include jaundice (yellowing of the skin and eyes), generalized itching, fatigue, abdominal pain and swelling, nausea and vomiting, and changes in bowel movements.

Complication

Complications of liver disease can include liver failure, liver cancer, and portal hypertension (high blood pressure in the veins that carry blood from the digestive organs to the liver). Treatment options for liver disease depend on the specific condition and may include medication, dietary changes, lifestyle modifications (such as quitting smoking or reducing alcohol consumption), and in some cases, surgery.

Prevention

Prevention of liver disease includes avoiding excessive alcohol consumption, getting vaccinated against hepatitis A and B, maintaining a healthy weight, and avoiding exposure to toxins that can damage the liver. It is important to see a doctor if you are experiencing symptoms of liver disease, as early diagnosis and treatment can help prevent complications and improve outcomes.
