What is Gastritis ?

Gastritis is a condition that occurs when the lining of the stomach becomes inflamed. It can be acute (sudden onset) or chronic (long-term), and can be caused by a variety of factors, including bacterial infections (such as H. pylori), excessive alcohol consumption, prolonged use of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), and autoimmune disorders.

Symptoms

Symptoms of gastritis may include nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain or discomfort, bloating, loss of appetite and bleeding. In some cases, gastritis may not cause any symptoms at all.

Diagnosis / Treatment

Diagnosis of gastritis typically involves a physical examination, blood tests and endoscopy. Treatment options may include medications to reduce stomach acid production, antibiotics (if an infection is present), and dietary changes to avoid trigger foods and irritants.

Complications

If left untreated, chronic gastritis can lead to complications such as ulcers, bleeding, and an increased risk of stomach cancer. It is important to see a doctor if you are experiencing symptoms of gastritis, as early diagnosis and treatment can help prevent complications and improve outcomes.

Prevention

Prevention of gastritis includes avoiding excessive alcohol consumption, limiting or avoiding NSAIDs, and treating underlying conditions that may contribute to the development of gastritis.
