Causes

The causes of C. diff colitis are related to the use of antibiotics, which can disrupt the natural balance of bacteria in the gut and allow C. difficile to flourish. Other risk factors for C. diff colitis may include being over the age of 65, having a weakened immune system, and being in a hospital or nursing home.

Complications

Complications of C. diff colitis can include dehydration, inflammation of the colon, and in severe cases, sepsis. Treatment options for C. diff colitis may include antibiotics that are specifically targeted to treat C. difficile, probiotics to help restore the natural balance of bacteria in the gut, and in some cases, surgery. Other treatment options include Fecal microbiota Transplant and Vowst, the first fecal microbiota product that is taken orally/ REBYOTA enema.

When to see doctor?

It is important to note that C. diff colitis can be quite serious, especially in people who are already ill or have weakened immune systems. If you are experiencing symptoms of C. diff colitis, it is important to see a doctor to determine the cause and to discuss treatment options. Additionally, good hygiene practices (such as washing your hands frequently) can help prevent the spread of C. difficile to others.
